Biography of the World Figure: John Lennon, Musician and Founder of The Beatles

If you hear the name of John Lennon, you will be associated with a popular band in the 1960s to 1970, the Beatles. Together with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, Lennon has created history as the first British band to be able to penetrate the US market.

After the Beatles broke up, Lennon was still active in music by cooperating with his wife, Yoko Ono. The name Lennon is also known as one of the world’s musicians who ended tragically because of being shot dead by a fan. John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England. His father, Alfred Lennon, was an Irish sailor, because of his work he could not accompany Julia, his wife when giving birth to their child.

Lennon’s childhood was also not very happy because of his tenuous relationship. The father is also rarely with him because he often goes out to sea. Until February 1944, the father left without news and only returned six months later only to find out if his wife, Julia was pregnant with another man. When he was four years old, Lennon was forced to choose between his father and mother who had separated. Little Lennon eventually decided to be with his mother, but more often lived with his aunt, who was called Aunt Mimi.

Nevertheless Julia still regularly visits Mimi’s residence in Mendips. It was when he was 11 years old, Lennon occasionally visited his mother in Liverpool. Lennon began to get acquainted and familiar with the music of his mother who often plays Elvis Presley songs. From her mother also Lennon learned to play an instrument, which at that time was a banjo. During elementary school, Lennon attended Dovedale Primary School in Liverpool and went on to Quarry Bank High School in the same city from 1952 to 1957.

When sitting in school, Lennon is known as a child who is relaxed and jokes more often. At the age of 16, Lennon got his first guitar bought by his mother. His aunt was more skeptical and always said that being a musician would not make money. In 1958, Lennon’s mother died after being hit by a car while walking home.

John Lennon and The Beatles Lennon have been actively playing music since they were 15 years old. While still attending school, precisely in September 1956, he formed a band called The Quarrymen, by the name of his school. It was through his performance with The Quarrymen that he finally met with Paul McCartney, who was then invited by Lennon to join his band. From McCartney, Lennon became acquainted with George Harrison who would later become the Beatles guitarist. They then recruited Stuart Sutcliffe, Lennon’s friend from art school, to become a bassist and Pete Best as a drummer in 1960. The five of them eventually formed The Beatles in early 1960. A year later, when appearing in their regular appearance at a club in Liverpool, they met with Brian Epstein, who will become the manager and bring the Beatles to sign a contract with EMI.

Together with their new drummer, Richard Starkey, or better known as Ringo Starr, The Beatles recorded their first song entitled “Love Me Do” in October 1962. Over time, the Beatles’ name became more known, and their songs managed to top the charts. Songs in the UK, including “Please Please Me,” “She Loves You” and “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The Beatles reached the peak of fame until finally the manager, Epstein, died from an overdose of sleeping pills. Since leaving the manager, the Beatles music career began to shake. However, in the last years before disbanding, which started to with Lennon’s withdrawal from the band in September 1969, the Beatles were still able to issue some hits, such as “Yellow Submarine” (1968) and “Let It Be” (1970). The Beatles finally announced disbanding in April 1970 with McCartney’s release.

Although he is no longer with the Beatles, Lennon has proven to be able to produce successful music on the market, one of them is Imagine, which released in 1971. Lennon with Yoko Ono then moved to the US in September 1971, despite being threatened by deportation by Richard Nixon’s government because of his activities as an activist who opposed the Vietnam War. But in 1976, two years after Nixon stepped down from the presidency, Lennon and Yoko Ono received permanent residence permits in the United States.

Lennon’s married life with Yoko Ono rocked by a third person, namely May Pang, who was none other than their assistant. However, Yoko Ono’s relationship with Lennon did not end. Even Yoko Ono had time to allow Lennon to live alone with Pang before finally their relationship improved. From his marriage to Yoko Ono, Lennon had a child who was later named Sean Lennon. Sean is Yoko Ono’s first child after having miscarried several times. But for Lennon, Sean was the second child because he also had children from his first marriage to Cynthia, who was named Julian Lennon.

Tragic Death After a vacuum because he chose to devote his time for his wife and child, Sean, in 1980. Lennon decided to return to music and released an album titled “Double Fantasy.” But only a few weeks after the release of his album, Lennon died. He was shot dead by one of his fans, named Mark David Chapman on December 8, 1980.

Lennon was shot shortly after getting out of the car which drove him home with his wife. As they walked to their apartment, Chapman approached Lennon and fired several shots at close range to Lennon’s back. He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital in New York but was declared dead when he arrived at the hospital. The day after Lennon’s Death, Yoko Ono announced that he would cremate the body of his late husband. The ashes distributed in one corner of Central Park, New York, which is now the Strawberry Fields Memorial, which built-in memory of John Lennon.
